1) I'm new to this list (and listservs in general) so I was wondering if
there is some protocol I should be aware of, in order to not offend the
masses?

I'm a freelance graphic designer and my work is split about 50/50
between web and print. I'm relatively new to IDD; I'm a 20-year Quark
user and am now migrating jobs over to IDD as they come along. My
general approach over the years has been to upgrade only when I need
to... which leads to my second topic...

2) I found this list after IDD CS3 crapped out on me in the middle of a
deadline job on Friday. I printed out a 7-page list of troubleshoots
from the Adobe site... but my initial thought was "why waste the time,
I'll just upgrade now" --- since I have a client who uses CS4 and it's
been a pain to have to convert stuff through INX.

So I pays my nickel (that is, pretty close to a full box of ziti) and
downloads my upgrade. The only problem being, Adobe doesn't sell CS4
anymore. So I got CS5 (design suite premium).

But did I read the system requirements? Of course not. Turns out you
can't load CS5 on a Powermac G5, you need an Intel box. Doh!

So rather than doing the return online, I call in order to speak to a
human being and find out if there's any way I can get CS4.

And now I'm coming to the interesting part:

No, I can't buy CS4 through Adobe.

However, if I purchase CS4 through a third party vendor (the customer
service dude said "If you can find it" but right now it's no trouble at
all to find), all I have to do is submit the receipt to Adobe and they
will give a free CS5 upgrade.

This is kinda nifty, because the CS5 upgrade would have been $850, but
the CS4 upgrade (through Amazon) was only $650.

I hope this info is useful to someone :-)

I finally got CS3 up and running, by the way, using a troubleshoot that
was posted for CS2: log in as root user and type:
chmod -R 777 "/Libary/Application Support/AdobeSING" folder <enter>
