Just a note to say that I really like Chaparral, another fine face from Carol Twombly.
I always admired it, but now that I've been working on a 650-page book that I set in Chaparral with various styles of Franklin Gothic for the 6 levels of heads (and for tables and capitons), I've grown to appreciate it a lot more.
Often when I return to the computer or when I am looking at a laserproof, I'm struck by how much Chaparral evokes the spirit of letterpress type. That surprised me. When I thought about it, I realized that Chaparral has a nice, slightly open set, characteristic of hot metal type and somewhat counter to a prevalence in digital type for closely set text.
I like the way it incorporates square-end serifs--almost but not quite slab serifs--with a type design of pretty uniform weight and shrewdly graceful, curved strokes.
