I have three versions of the Symbol font: an old Adobe Type1, a Monotype .ttf that seems to be an OpenType font in a TrueType wrapper, and Adobe SymbolLT (OT from FontFolio).
I thought it would make sense to use the latest and greatest version of the font (if it ain't broke, break it), so I tried to use SymbolLT, but it's weird -- all I get are boxes with X's in them.
Then I uninstalled the Type1 version and started using the .ttf version, but ran into big problems. I'm using Mathtype in Word for equations that are being imported into InDesign files, and the .ttf version of Symbol didn't work properly. The tall brackets in the questions blew up -- the top two vertical pieces were X boxes, and the bottom piece was a weird character with a diagonal across it. Might be some normal symbol character, but I don't know what it was or why it was in my bracket.
So then I decided to uninstall the .ttf version and it just wouldn't go away. My ancient font manager, FontNav, couldn't seem to uninstall it. It was stuck fast in my Windows Fonts folder. I know it's a Bad Thing to have two fonts installed with the same name, and the .ttf version was probably slugging it out my Type1 Symbol font, and winning.
I finally got rid of the .ttf font (moved it to another drive where nobody could find it and now it's all quiet on the Western font front), but now when I look at the Type1 font in FontNav, the characters won't display. This could just be a FontNav glitch, because the font seems to be working fine otherwise (subject to change without notice).
So what's the deal with Symbol? Does the .ttf Monotype version have different characters or font mapping from the Adobe Type 1 version? And why doesn't the Adobe SymbolLT font work for me? I'm using XP, but I wouldn't think that would matter.
