There is a way to apply two character styles to the same bit of text simultaneously.
1. Apply a character style as part of a nested style. 2. Then you can apply another CS on top of it.
ID has a very convenient feature in Nested Styles that can make this easy.
First, create a CS, which you will use for the Nested Style. Let's say it is just the font Palatino, which will change the underlying font.
Next, create another character style, Italic, which just selects the italic version of the font family.
Now, make a paragraph style using Helvetica with a Nested Style using Palatino, but do it this way: Add Nested style: None through 1 End Nested Style character. Add Nested Style: Palatino through 1 End Nested Style character. Add Nested Style: Repeat.
Apply the paragraph style to the text. Then, insert your cursor before a word you want to change to Palatino and insert the ENS character. Insert another ENS after the word or phrase in Palatino. The text will start with Helvetica, the font in the underlying paragraph style, then switch to Palatino at the first ENS, then switch back to Helvetica at the next ENS. If you feel like it, you can add several more ENSes in there and make the text switch back and forth several more times.
Okay, that's one CS in use. Now, apply the Italics CS to a word in Palatino. It will become Palatino italics. Yep. Two character styles occupying the same space at the same time, really complicating the laws of physics!
