More ID CS4-to-PDF Link Madness ...
We've touched on this before, but I think this is a new wrinkle. At least to me.
My Navy client loves to put long URLs into stories, upon which readers click to get more info. Fair enough. Bob, you and others previously told me the best way to preserve the links in the transition to PDF was to make/save them right in ID CS4, not later in Acrobat. Which I now do. They look fine and function as expected when I test them within ID CS4.
Because of Draconian filesize demands, my resulting PDF -- regardless of content -- must <always> save at or below 1 mb. An axe murderer has more chance of an appeal than I do. This was impossible to achieve even with the preset Smallest File Size, even with imagery resolution reduced to the equivalent of a woodcut.
However, if I "print" it to PostScript and Distill it, it comes in right at or even well below a mb for a 19 mb file. Excellent.
But in Distilling to PDF, as before, any URL that line-breaks only gets made a hyperlink on the first line, no matter that it was a hot and functional link in ID CS4.
Maybe I've been staring at these menus too long, but I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Since I'm standing here with my hand out anyway, if anyone has a method for deploying Smallest File Size to get gigantus maximus reduction within ID CS4, that would be my 1st pref. But in any case, despite having what appear to be all the other associated controls and options, I don't see any modification options in Distiller to include hyperlinks, such as in ID CS4's File/Adobe PDF Presets/Smallest File Size dialog that comes up with that option to check/preserve hyperlinks and interactive content (or not).
Related: I tried to side-step the URL line-break issue by swapping in some form of "click here," and putting the URL behind that text in the ID CS4 Hyperlinks panel. This too works like buttah within ID CS4. But no form of clickable hotlink translates to PDF using this dodge. Not even a little bit.
This is making my hair hurt.
