I'm on the Colorsync 'list also.
10.6 hasn't been "trouble-free" with regard to printing in general, or color management in particular.
If the 9800 worked OK with an older OS and HP printer driver, but won't under Snow Leopard, it's probably the OS (and/or) new driver.
IMHO printing from that OS to any new printer needs to be evaluated before $$ change hands.
