you are not cutting new ground; however i think this is a case where those who have gone before have found cameras to be more efficient than scanners

presumably you'll be able to flatten your source material so you won't need Google's patented book-page-curvature-compensation technique:

i think a modern DSLR on a copy stand with a good flat-plane lens would probably also do a fine job of this; for a bit more control and speed (and cost), consider a digital medium format camera tethered to a computer, e.g.
