PC crashed this morning (TWO drives failed, and of my two extra new drives I had in reserve, one turned out to be bad) so I had to run out and buy a new PC. Old one had XP, new one has Windows 7. I set it up to run my old apps in XP Mode, but it's unbelievably slow.
For example, it took two hours to restore a 3 GB folder from a recent DriveImage backup.
Nothing I can do about that at the moment (when I get my old PC back from the fixer, I'll restore my backups to it and then transfer them to the new PC), but I can see that I need to get some new apps that are Windows 7 (64-bit) compatible for the new box.
First off, I'm looking for suggestions for backup software (I back up to three different external hard drives, alternating them), since I'll want to start doing backups on the new PC. Looks like DriveImage has been discontinued.
I also need a font manager. I'm still using FontNav. I've been waiting (im)patiently for Linotype to release FontExplorer (or whatever it's called) for PC, but I'm starting to wonder if that will ever happen. What are my other options?
And frankly, I don't even know how to load/unload fonts in Windows without using a font manager! I've got millions of fonts, so keeping them all installed is not even remotely possible. I like FontNav's ability to create font groups that I can load and unload at will.
I'm also struggling with the Windows 7 interface. Any way to make it more XP-like? I don't need it to be purty, I need it to display information. Details, details, details ...
TIA,
Marlene
