In my dotage, I have decided to undertake the permanent scanning for
digital storage of as many of the 160 years of weekly newspapers
available in my hometown. I worked for the paper in the past and now the
first 100 years are turning to powder, as aging newsprint is likely to
do. Unfortunately, the library copies that are on microfilm are going
bad also, scuffed and torn with use.

Most of the issues are 8-page broadsheets and they do come out quite
good when converted to PDF. I do have the support of the local library
and other organizations in this, so a good scanner is not out of the
question. Me living long enough to finish the task is another matter.

I've been scanning them 4-up with an 8x14 scanner and assembling them in
PhotoShop. Tedious, at best. The thought occurred to me that a
tabloid-size scanner would cut the task by three quarters. I've done
some research on large format scanners but haven't found any 17x22s that
would suit the purpose.

Anyone have recommendations on decent 11x17/12x18 scanners that will
stand up to such usage? Mac with Vuescan, in case it matters. Does
anyone seriously do this sort of thing or am I cutting out some new
ground here?
