The problem is: when I am not using an external display.... There is not a lot of real estate!

I believe the v700 does have firewire (which Apple seems to be dropping support for?).

Solid state is ridiculously expensive.
How do people insure that their photos are not a victim of a HD breakdown?
If buying new, are there any cheaper alternatives to Applecare and which store has the best prices? (It seems to be fairly cutthroat).
The number of models out there makes things extremely confusing. I'm also not clear: Are the original Apple drives always slow? So a 7200 RPM is the way to go?
I feel like I'm studying for an engineering degree every time I buy something....
I'm in California, so buying here adds 10% to my bill.
