Re: Imposition in cs5 Mac (or CS4 maybe)
Been off-list due to looming deadlines, back from press-check now... rested -- so for those still interested: I'm sure your happy with distiller, and that may indeed be the most reliable way for now... but if you get tired of that... ?? You said you could use "Print to booklet" to print to Adobe PDF 9.0, but couldn't access all settings?? What settings are you missing? I thought all of them were available in InDesign, if not, surely they are in Distiller... and you can make a preset that uses them... and that Preset should show up in InDesign, all mine do. Am I missing something here??
Did you click the dreaded (Apple) Printer... button in Adobe's Print dialog? (with current updates, you MUST for Adobe PDF 9.0 to work) If in 10.5, did you "expand" the (Apple) print window and choose "PDF Options" instead of "Layout" from the drop-down menu (that's where Acrobat PDF Presets reside). In 10.6, I think it is broken now.
I am still waiting for my CS5 disks... ;-( so maybe someone else can say if it works in CS5. This is how it works in CS4 (CS5 should be the same I think)
Mac only... Make your custom PDF settings in InDesign (File..Adobe PDF Presets... Define...) or in Acrobat Distiller (Settings... Edit Adobe PDF Settings) as usual, then choose File... Print booklet, then
In 10.5.8 Leopard: choose Adobe PDF 9.0 as your printer, **must click on the dreaded "Printer...." button in the Print dialog to correctly choose printer for this** and choose your custom Acrobat PDF Settings in the "save PDF" dialog that follows. Then 1. click Print in that Apple print dialog and 2. Click "Print" again in Adobe's Print dialog.
In 10.6.4 Snow Leopard, Print to PDF is broken now in CS4, with Acrobat 9.3..3 update, if you didn't update Acrobat or if they ever fix it or maybe it works OK in CS5: Click on the dreaded "Printer..." button in the Print dialog... then click and hold the "PDF" button on lower left and choose "Save as Adobe PDF" from the pop-down menu, IF it was working, when you click on "Save as Adobe PDF", an Automator action would launch and you would get a small Dialog to choose your Adobe PDF Setting and what to do when PDF is done (such as launch acrobat). Then click Print in that Apple print dialog... and "Print" again in Adobe's Print dialog.
If you don't have Adobe PDF 9 as a printer choice in Leopard or if you don't have "Save as Adobe PDF" under the PDF button of al=apple's print dialog, then you may need to open Acrobat, choose "Repair Acrobat installation" under "Help" menu and repair PDF printer.
But as for right now with Acrobat 9.3.3 and InDesign 6.0.5, it is not working.

Doing my homework in the archives here, I found this comment. Bret, if you are onlist, can you point me to where I can apply preset settings I have made for this job's prepress. Quoting: Bret Perry to InDesign Mac: True, and if you have full Acrobat as mentioned earlier, you can print direct to "Adobe PDF" (not Quartz) and use whatever custom Acrobat settings you want. But the spendy dedicated PDF imposition software usually have more control of creep and such, a free trial is a handy idea.
