there are different resolutions that match your description; here are Apple's minimum recommendations:
so you see you meet the minimum for 720p, but since you are right at the minimum, anything else competing for resources (e.g. background processes, other apps running, even USB drives) may mean the difference; for 1080p, it would be no surprise at all that your system balks; more RAM might help (and seems advisable anyway), but no guarantees
