Our annual "Second Bulletin" came back from the printer just fine except for the first page, which printed way too dark. The PDF file I sent of the internal pages is here:
As you can see, the first page, while no gem of design or anything, at least didn't look like it was going to print out badly. Here it is in InDesign, packaged with photo and font:
The photo is RGB and was deliberately left such for the version that was put up in PDF on the web, but I converted the PDF to grayscale in Acrobat for the black-and-white printed version so that shouldn't have mattered, I would think. I'm not going to scan the printed page, but can show more or less what it looks like by converting from PDF and darkening:
Anybody have an idea why it printed out badly? I have three theories:
(1) Wrong PDF export settings, inadequate for the transparency that was used on this page only. They came indeed from a CS3 joboptions file sent to us awhile ago by another printer, to which I thought this job was going. Compatibility: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4), No Color Conversion, Don't Include Profiles.
(2) Didn't know what I was doing in Acrobat Convert Colors dialog and thus messed up the conversion. I was clicking on a couple of things, and I'm still not sure what exactly I should have done. I concluded at some point that all I needed to do and all I should do is click on Convert Colors to Output Intent with one of the Gray Gamma profiles selected (which grays out all the other options), but I'm not sure what happened or what should have happened here.
(3) Some screwup at the printer about which I have no way of knowing.
An explanation and Rx would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
